Space Management: Review of space norms.
This study by Kilner Planning and London Economics researches the scope for providing updated space norms for the higher education (HE) sector. It sets out a method using principles similar to those underpinning space norms to calculate indicative space needs based on HEIs' own particular profiles of academic activity and methods of delivery. This approach, for which a framework is provided, is likely to be of most interest to HEIs which would like to better understand the capacity of their estates; to start from first principles in getting an insight into what type and how much space may be needed; and to model the effect of changes in student and staff numbers.
Space Management Project: Case studies.
This report by Kilner Planning brings together three case studies which explore different aspects of space management in individual institutions. The case studies focus on issues which were highlighted as being of particular interest to many institutions during the survey of space management practice in Phase One of the Space Management Project and in feedback from Space Management Group seminars. They are:
- Queen Margaret University College – The Relocate Project
- University of Newcastle upon Tyne – Versatile research buildings
- Sheffield Hallam University – Promoting effective utilisation.

Managing space: a review of English further education and HE overseas.
This study by Kilner Planning and London Economics considers approaches to space management outside the UK HE sector, to see how they might contribute to UK HE space management guidance. It investigates the method used by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to assess space needs in the further education (FE) sector in England, and researches examples of higher education (HE) space planning and management in other parts of the world.
